Construction Cost: $5.9 million
This project, totaling 86,000 square feet of new construction and renovation work, includes a new outpatient care area and expands the services of radiology, pathology, physical therapy, and neurology. The existing hospital has been renovated to provide for a 23-bed critical care unit and an improved labor/ delivery and ob/gyn department. The two unfinished "shelled" floors of the existing hospital have been completed for psychiatric are and general nursing services. A special part of the program is the design of the facilities for a CT Scanner unit to augment the diagnostic services of the radiology department. The design and phasing of the work allowed the expansion to progress while maintaining the continuous operation of each department.

Construction Cost: $5.6 million
The diagnostic imaging department's primary function is to provide multimodality imaging services for inpatients at Swedish Hospital and for outpatients in the Edmonds, Washington medical referral community. Current services include radiography, mammography, fluoroscopy, computed tomography, ultrasound, echocardiography, MRI and nuclear medicine. The planned PETCT scanner will be a shared resource between diagnostic CT and PETCT. Projected patient volumes for PETCT are 2 per day or 10 per week. Projected patient volumes for diagnostic CT are 8 per day or 48 per week for inpatient and outpatient exams. The design concept is to create a healing environment, utilizing, as part of the interior design, colors and materials with indirect lighting and featured artwork.

This 34,380 square foot addition and alteration project features expanded inpatient care facilities, including a new medical/surgical and obstetric wing with all private rooms and three LDRP's. The project also includes an expansion/remodel to the clinical laboratory, surgery, the outpatient/ ambulatory care unit and central service. An important design feature of the project is a large family waiting area for obstetrics, adjacent an exterior courtyard, in special consideration of the larger families located in the hospital's service area. The project was constructed in four phases, enabling the hospital to remain in full operation with minimum disruption during construction.

Emergency / trauma medical and nursing practice in the department provides care to approximately 25,000 patients per year. Patients are provided with surgical, orthopedic, urological ENT, gynecological, pediatric, family practice and internal medicine services. Patients, who present themselves to the department, are triaged according to the severity of symptoms, registered and treated and / or stabilized. Disposition of patients is to home / family health care provider, to other areas of the hospital or to another facility. There are to be two separate entrances: an ambulance entrance and a "walk-in" entrance for non-emergency patients, within a total area of 6,124 sq ft.

The project totaling approximately 162,800 square feet, will include 79,800 square feet of new space and approximately 83,000 square feet scheduled for alteration. The scope of the alteration part of the project includes the relocation of some departments to achieve greater operational efficiency in terms of staff and patient flow. Specifically, the alteration portion of the project will upgrade phases one and two of the existing hospital, focusing on inpatient ancillary and administrative functions including both minor and major alterations. The project also includes a new two story addition for outpatient and surgical services, a new obstetrics unit, and additional administrative functions. There are also planned improvements to the hospital site, including additional surface parking, a new hospital entry drive, and an upgrade to the service entry for deliveries.

The project included the installation of a new washer and sterilizer manufactured by Getinge and Starred. The installation involved two areas, the soiled work/decontamination room and a clean assembly work room as follows. The soiled room is a receiving station for all dirty instrumentation and equipment. This room will include a large cleaning sink, two long counters for instrument sets, a large, long sink, and space for garbage, linen, and contaminated material hamper space. Wall space for washer/decontaminator and air for blowing instruments to dry will be provided. Also include area to wash instrument transport carts. The clean area is for wrapping, organizing and putting together instruments and sets after decontamination. Include a large center table for wrapping, cabinets with windows on all walls to store supplies for set preparation, storage for all bone plates and screws, and a space for peel pack hot seal machine. Counter space for a holding area for decontaminated sets and sets that are wrapped for sterilization will be provided.

The primary function of the facility is to provide radiation therapy for outpatients in the general service area of Stevens Hospital. Presently therapy is performed utilizing one linear accelerator at the PSTI facility. The present facility provides service for 25 to 30 patients per day. With the installation of a CT Scanner, the center will be better able to diagnose and form treatment plans for patients. Patients originate from the service area and also from the hospital's inpatient medical oncology service located as part of the institute. Currently approximately one inpatient per day that is incapable of unassisted access/egress is brought directly from the existing hospital by ambulance, with remaining volume o patients being outpatients. The design concept is to create a healing environment, utilizing, as part of the interior design, colors and materials with indirect lighting and featured selections of artwork.

This rural hospital in Benton County, built in several phases since 1948, required the addition of 30,000 sq. ft. of new space and renovation of some 32,000 sq. ft. of existing space. Work on the addition included two new elevators, a new entry lobby/admitting area and totally replaced mechanical/ electrical systems. The renovated and expanded departments include medical/surgical, emergency, obstetrics, pediatrics, labor/delivery, radiology, laboratory, pharmacy, central stores and the nursing home unit.

This 38,000 square foot project added 40 beds to the existing 86-bed facility and included minor alterations to preexisting ancillary and support spaces. The new addition provides a modern 11-bed critical care unit located on the first floor immediately adjacent to the emergency, laboratory, radiology and surgical departments. It includes eight progressive care beds adjacent to the ICU/CCU unit. The second floor includes a 21-bed nursing unit, contiguous with the existing second floor medical wing. Patient rooms were designed to take advantage of the views of both the Straits of Juan de Fuca and the Olympic Mountains. This expansion also included new psychiatric and pediatric units, incorporated as a remodel to the existing building.

This 58,000 square foot addition and alteration project features expanded outpatient care facilities, including new emergency room, lobby, admitting department, clinical laboratory, and 18-bed short-stay unit. It also includes expanded, remodeled radiology, surgery and dietary departments. The principal feature of the project is a one-story addition which envelopes the entire front length of the existing facility providing a new, updated image for the hospital. Access to patient care areas during construction became a significant challenge. Decker/Fukui responded by designing a sub-phasing and temporary exiting scheme, which was negotiated with city and state regulatory officials, and allows existing departments to be maintained in place throughout construction, with minimum disruption.

Construction Cost: $4.3 million
This new three-story, 22,000 square foot addition includes a new surgery, 10-bed critical care unit, and a central service department. Mechanical and electrical system improvements were made in conjunction with expanded radiology and emergency areas.
The design was the result of extensive analysis of the existing operation and facilities, including discussions with administration, medical staff and the board. Continuous operation of each department during the construction was programmed into the design of the building. This project was completed in 1986.

The project is a major addition and alteration to the existing Naval Hospital at the Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. The 60,000 square foot addition, including a new entrance is a one-level expansion to the west of the existing hospital, extending the existing courtyard. The addition included emergency, radiology, pharmacy and laboratory areas are grouped adjacent to the existing building. Outpatient clinics and administration areas are consolidated to provide flexibility and expandability. The 39,000 square foot alteration consists of an expanded surgery and delivery suite and improvements to the nursing units. Dental facilities are updated, as are supply and central services areas.
The firm received a Design Award of Exceptional Merit for this project in 1993, from the Naval Facilities Engineering Command.

This 30,000 square foot project at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard houses a complex program consisting of a military/civilian occupational health clinic. Supporting it is a highly specialized radiation health and radiation casualty facility. Emergency, pharmacy, radiology, and laboratory facilities are also included which support both clinics. The concrete architectural solution resulted form the site's steep topography and narrow configuration and the program requirement of rooftop parking.

This project, totaling 17,500 square feet of new construction, includes both radiation and medical oncology therapy. The radiation component is located on the fi rst fl oor and includes a Varian Clinac 18/6MeV linear accelerator and space for a future unit. It also includes a simulator function together with examination rooms, treatment planning center, and physician and nursing support spaces. Connected by a two-story, glass-enclosed entry lobby is the second floor medical offi ce space for medical oncologists. These tenants form a treatment team for patients who originate in the Stevens Memorial Hospital service area. This two-story, freestanding structure, operated by the hospital, serves both the inpatient and outpatient population of the hospital.

This 4,700 square foot, freestanding oncology unit is owned and operated by Olympic Memorial Hospital. It is designed to incorporate the use of the Varian model 6/100 linear accelerator along with a Toshiba simulator unit. Additional spaces include examination and treatment areas together with physician and staff support space. The single story facility relates aesthetically to the low-rise commercial and residential buildings in the neighborhood by using similar materials and architectural features. The project is part of the hospital's effort to position care closer to the needs of the patients of Sequim.

This project, totaling 4,992 square feet of alteration to an existing office building, was designed to provide for radiation oncology therapy. This program is located on the first floor of a four-story office building and includes a Philips SL25 linear accelerator together with space for a future unit. Included also are a simulator function together with examination rooms, treatment planning center, and physician and nursing support spaces. A major design feature of the project was the maze corridor concept access to the accelerator room, which was designed to eliminate the need for a shielded door. This program was part of the overall oncology service provided by Humana Hospital Alaska. The Oncology Center serves 25 to 40 patients per day, including Anchorage area residents, and retired and dependent U.S. military personnel.

Science Hall remodel, Phases I and II

Construction Cost: $4.1 million
Phase I of the project provided the infrastructure of new mechanical electrical and fire protection systems in a general science building that was built in 1939. The building houses the Departments of Biology, Botany, Genetics, Zoology and Microbiology. Three floors were added to include space for teaching laboratories, interstitial mechanical space and a 4,400 square feet, moderate and enhanced controlled greenhouse. Phase II of the project included 68,000 square feet on all floors, remodeled into new research and teaching laboratories. New aviaries were constructed at the sixth floor level, and new research greenhouses were completed within the greenhouse enclosure provided in phase I. Electrical work focused on providing enhanced communications and computer networking systems. Other improvements included upgrading the building's energy performance, one component of which was the replacement of the original wood framed windows with double-glazed aluminum-framed windows.

Construction Cost: $15.2 million
Phase I enlarged the existing Science Building with a 31,900 square feet addition and included remodel work that joined the new addition with two existing building wings. The project provides up-to-date facilities for many of the high hazard areas within this science research and teaching facility. The majority of the new spaces serve the Biology Department and, to various extents, the Departments of Chemistry, Geology, Physics and Botany. A 1,400 square feet greenhouse provides botany research and teaching space, along with three large teaching laboratories, all included as part of Phase I. One of these laboratories, which was designed for teaching biochemistry/biotechnology, includes a tissue culture room with highly filtered air to provide an exceptionally clean environment. Emphasis was given to provide safe and clean environments for the specialized uses of the building, while considering the need for future adaptability of the facility.
Phases II and III provide remodeling of the existing 92,000 square feet Science Building, for the Biology, Chemistry, Geology and Physics departments, teaching laboratories, offices and classrooms.

Intercollegiate Athletics Facilities Project

Construction Cost: $3.3 million
The primary facility of the project is a 31,500 square foot building used to house a state-of-the-art 10,000 square foot, high-bay weight training facility, as well as areas for the intercolliegiate athletics department administrative offices and Husky Marching Band. Located at the rear of the Edmundson Pavillion, the exterior of the buildingis brick to match the existing building with colored cement plaster used in areas as a contrasting material. The gable form of the building repeats the predominant form of the Pavillion.
Other portions of the project include a 200-seat underground assembly room adjacent to the Edmondson Pavillion/Husky stadium tunnel and the remodeling of the Graves Building lower floor into facilities for student academic services. Pre-design services included detailed programming of specialized areas based upon the University's program.

This 29,000 square foot project is designed to provide the exisiting building with a complete and comprehensive facility for both men and women athletes. The elements consist of a large activity area for intercollegiae competition, women's locker, training and meeting rooms, as well as various support facilities.
